OptiView XG was the first network infrastructure analyzer for wired and wireless networks, making this project complex and harnessing engineering collaboration across global Fluke/Fluke Netwoks teams.

Project

We started redesigning the original OptiView Network Analyzer (pic. R). It evolved into a rugged, flagship tablet computer combining copper, fiber, and wireless testing features. OptiView replaced EtherScope (pic. L) in a planned sunset and took on its feature set.

Early mechanical engineering CAD volumes allowed us to manage the tight spaces between parts, ensuring an optimal layout with more significant components. We had several rounds of design revisions to minimize the stack-up.

Customer Insights

Our team visited Albuquerque, New Mexico, to experience voice of the customer (VOC) interviews and observations firsthand. We shadowed technicians as they traveled to service orders.

We noticed many job site obstacles that shaped the form and function meaningfully. We identified opportunities for carrying, hanging, and viewing from several positions.

Inspiration

I looked to a visually strong header and footer silhouette, like protective hard hats or work boots. I aimed to develop a language that balanced precise and intelligent design lines.

Protection

An essential requirement was the need for IP45 protection on all connectors. I tore down rugged computers to better understand how elastomer parts seal against moisture and dust when compressed.

Visual Brand Language

Rugged top and bottom impact zones are inspired by superhero cowls and helmets used to visually frame the display proportionately and provide higher contact points around sensitive connection ports and controls.

Prototypes & Testing

R&D Iteration

These 3D views result from a joint ME/ID effort to refine the plastic part design and electro-mechanical integration. This helped to hasten design validation and reduce physical prototyping hours and engineering.
