Our design team devised the original sketch idea to create a PowerA spin-off brand called MOGA (MObile GAming) and usher it through mass production, selling at AT&T stores and GameStop.

The MOGA brand sparked numerous competitors and created a new way to engage customers in the growing mobile gaming market.

These first MOGA Android controllers offered supercharged features found on full-size console controllers and led the movement of smartphone mobile gaming controllers.

The “Spring” sketch is one of a dozen concepts for securing a smartphone to a controller while keeping it pocket-sized. Given the significant phone size/weight variations, we solidified this mechanical direction after validating its reliability and strength.

Color, Material, Finish

When closed, the clamp is a vertical stripe that bisects the face of the controller. This was an opportunity for branding and slight surface transitions to invite areas of operation.

Ergonomics

After much physical testing with 3D-printed prototypes and handmade samples from factories, we championed additional contouring of the bottom side to allow more surface contact inside the palm. This analysis and improvement made for longer mobile gaming sessions, especially with the added phone weight on the front end.

How do we replicate the joy of on-the-go gaming from V1 to a larger console controller on a phone, TV, tablet, or PC?

Existing “FUS10N” controllers I designed for Power A - Xbox 360, PS3. We simply cut the form in half and integrated the folding clamp.

We leveraged the architecture and feature set for faster time-to-market. The ribbed grips from the FUS10N became a shared design element on both MOGAs.
