The LinkRunner AT is a rugged, fast, complete copper and fiber Ethernet network connectivity tester designed for frontline technicians. At launch, it was the first of its kind in capabilities and handheld size.

I took inspiration from rugged walkie-talkies and flip phones, which have a history of isolating the antenna for optimal signal strength. Meeting the critical antenna spacing requirements resulted in a taller "forehead."

I incorporated a negative space design element inspired by Fluke's clamp meters to minimize the visual mass.

Unfortunately, the void had to be filled in, as concerns with EMI and signal attenuation led us to err on caution. These 3D-printed models show the evolution of the void and how I sculpted the area to keep an artifact of the void and tie into the design cues of Optiview and Microscanner 2.

User Experience / UI

I collaborated with the software team to evaluate UX prototypes and standardize a design language for the embedded LinkRunner AT and companion desktop app,

These prototypes explored options for visually representing network strength and availability and found more precise ways to improve the interaction between the elastomer keypad and display graphics.
