OptiView XG is the 1st network infrastructure analyzer for wired & wireless networks. This complex tablet computer utilized Fluke’s global engineering teams
The Project
We were to combine the utility of two existing products, the EtherScope Network Assistant (pic. L) and the OptiView Network Analyzer (pic. R), into a flagship tablet computer that melds copper, fiber, and wireless testing.
Early mechanical engineering CAD volumes allowed us to manage the tight spaces between parts, ensuring an optimal layout with more components. We had several rounds adjusting stack-up heights.
Customer Insights
Our team visited Albuquerque, New Mexico, to experience firsthand voice of the customer (VOC) interviews & observations.
We noticed many job site obstacles that shaped the form and function meaningfully. We identified opportunities for carrying, hanging, and viewing from several positions.
Visual Brand Language
Rugged top and bottom impact zones were inspired by superhero masks and helmets. I used this composition to frame the display proportionately and provide higher contact points around sensitive connection ports.
Inspiration
I also looked to a visually strong header and footer silhouette, such as those found in protective hard hats or sturdy work boots, to convey a sense of safety and reliability.
Protection
An requirement was the need for IP45 protection on all connectors. I tore down rugged PCs to better understand how parts seal when compressed.

Prototypes & Testing

These are the main products I designed from oldest to newest (L-R) as the lead designer along with Wayne Hoofnagle and Sena Janky.
